Welcome to the Northeastern University Mass Spectrometry Facility

Northeastern University Mass Spectrometry Facility

The Barnett Institute of Chemical and Biological Analysis was established in 1973 as a center for innovative interdisciplinary research and advanced training in analytical chemistry for biomedical applications. The Institute comprises 12 Faculty Fellows reaching across Northeastern University’s Colleges of Science, Computer Science, Engineering, and Bouvé College of Health Sciences. It is housed in the Northeastern University’s Department of Chemistry & Chemical Biology within the College of Science at Northeastern.
The Mass Spectrometry Facility associated with the Barnett Institute is a 2,200 sq. ft laboratory space that houses state-of-the-art liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry instrumentation. The lab is operated as a “fee-for-service” resource for Northeastern University and external research investigators. The Facility provides support for mass spectrometry-based molecular profiling applications, including proteomics, protein characterization, targeted protein/peptide analysis, small molecule characterization, metabolomics, and pharmacokinetic (PK) studies.

Proteomics

Proteins are large, complex molecules that are required for the structure, function and regulation of biological systems. The proteome is the entire set of proteins expressed by a cell, tissue or organism. Post-translational modifications are modifications on amino acids that participate in the protein structure and signaling.

We provide services to identify, quantify and characterize proteins from any biological system. We offer proteome analysis, targeted quantitation, post-translational modification analysis, protein-protein interaction analysis and more.

Single Cell Proteomics

Unlike bulk proteomics that studies the average protein expression across a group of cells, single cell proteomics explores the diversity and heterogeneity of single cells. This in turn gives a new understanding of cell biology, cellular responses to stimuli and how different pathways contribute to a cell’s function.

We offer single cell and low protein input proteomic analysis either label-free or using TMT labeling (nPOP).

Small Molecule Analysis

We offer small molecule (<2,000 Da) targeted and untargeted services for PK/PD, metabolomics, and environmental studies.

Protein Characterization

Accurate mass measurement of intact proteins.
